The Ask-me Girl
I read an article today that hit a cord with me. The title, The Ask Me Girl, caught my eye. "Hmm," I thought, "that sounds like me!" My blog's address is "holly I have a question" after all.
The author, Windy Chinn, has it a little worse than me. She actually had to wear a sign around her neck that said, "
This is true even of my personal time. People will call at all hours of the night to ask me something about something work-related, like, "When is Spring Break?" or "How much does the BSU parking permits cost?". I'm handed checks or envelopes at church and at home to "take to the BSU." Some days I feel like I have lost my identity as "Holly" and have just become a phone book or the dispenser of BSU facts.
Don't get me wrong, I love my job. I like helping people and I probably do know most of the answers. But sometimes I feel like having the answers is my identity. "Go ask Holly, she knows everything." So they come, they ask, and they leave. Many times, people call me not to talk to me or to spend time with me, but to simply get answers.
Hmmm.....I wonder how many people treat God the same way people treat me. God knows all the answers, so if I’m the "ASK-ME GIRL," then God— being bigger— is the ASK-ME GOD.
How many times a day does He hear, "God, I have a question?" How many times do we say, "God has the answer, ask Him." And they come, and they ask, and they leave.
In all the search for answers, do we miss that His identity is not defined by the answers He can give, but who He is? Do we merge the work He does with why He is to be known? Instead of just answering questions all day, does He desire to be known simply as "I Am"? Doesn't He want us to spend time with Him just because of who He is and not JUST for the answers He can give?
It is okay to ask God questions--He does know the answers and He does want to help. But don't confuse the answers with who God is. And don't miss the most important questions of all: God what are you like? Can I spend time with you? Where do you want me to meet you today? What are the desires of your heart?
My God is worth being known, even if He nevers answers another question, He is worth being known.
